Modes and Exotic Scales

Modes

Ionian
C,D,E,F,G,A,B

Starts On C, This is also called the Major scale.

Basic Chord Sequence- C, F, C, G

Dorian
D,E,F,G,A,B, C

Starts On D, This scale is thought to be mysterious in sound. Used by Progressive Rock Band, Pink Floyd often.

Basic Chord Sequence- Dm, G7,

Phyrigian
E,F,G,A,B,C,D

Starts On E, This is usually associated with Spanish Guitar.

Basic Chord Sequence- Em, F, Em, Dm

Lydian
F,G,A,B,C,D,E

Starts On F, This scale is usually used by Shred Guitarists, in particular Steve Vai.

Basic Chord Sequence- F, G, F, Em

Mixolydian
G,A,B,C,D,E,F

Starts On G. This scale was a favorite of musician Frank Zappa.

Basic Chord Sequence- G, F

Aeolian

A,B,C,D,E,F,G

Starts On A, This is also called the Minor Scale and used extensively through most musical genres.

Basic Chord Sequence- Am, Dm, Em, Am

Locrian
B,C,D,E,F,G,A

Starts On B, This scale has a particularly sinister sound and the tonic 7 chord was nicknamed the 'devil in music' because of this.

Basic Chord Sequence- Bdim, F,
